Noori New Album Launch |
Pub Date: 12.09.05 |
On Spetember 10th, 2005, noori released their second album – Peeli Patti
aur Raja Jani ki Gol Dunya (PPRJKGD).
After touring with their debut album – Suno ke Main Hun Jawan – for almost two
years, noori decided to take a break from the music scene and start working on
their second album. This break also marked the departure of their bass player
Mohammed Ali Jafri. In April 2005, noori had finished their work and were ready
to release PPRJKGD. However this release was halted by a sudden crackdown on
local CD/DVD manufacturing units on charges of piracy. The situation took almost
four months to clear out and since the re-opening of these factories in August
’05, noori is one of the first artists to put out an album.
Released by Sadaf Stereo, PPRJKGD comprises of 10 singles (on CD, whereas there
are 4 additional bonus tracks on the Cassette release). According to noori,
“this album is the next logical step to our previous album. The music is more
mature, the tone is more serious, and this time, our main target audience
includes those people who are entering adulthood – basically the same people who
grew up and out of listening to the youth anthems we had put out a few years
back.”
PPRJKGD specifically talks about the ‘indifference that prevails in this
society’. The lyrical content of this album attempts to portray a variety of
real life characters.
“On one hand”, says noori, “we have the self-indulgent addicts, living in their
own shells, trying to discover the very basic facts of life; on another we have
the madman who has taken himself ‘beyond’ reality, having discovered a state of
bliss and a point of no return. Then there are the rich and prosperous who are
never content with life; their affluence has left them empty from inside, and
they themselves are beginning to feel its emptiness. And finally there is the
lethargic, not so affluent, unemployed procrastinator, who is so lost in his
world of dreams that even his pet-dogs get sick of him and leave him to his own.
[…] in the end this album is a call upon our people to do some introspection. It
would be very difficult to live happily if we continue this way!”
Some of the songs in this album (like Khalla, Ooncha and Saari Raat Jaaga) had
already been making waves since before noori even came into the limelight. In
fact these are the songs that gave noori the popularity to come out into the
local music scene. The band openly shares that 6 out of the 10 album tracks had
been composed and finalized almost six to seven years ago. “It didn’t take very
long to compose the other four songs either”, says front-man, Ali Noor, “but
what took us over seven months to complete was the production process of the
album; all the way from recording, to mixing to mastering”. Recorded and
Engineered by Mekal Hassan, at the Digital Fidelity Studios, Lahore, the band
confidently claims that this album has created a totally new standard for audio
production in Pakistan. They are very thankful to Mr. Mekal Hassan who,
according to them, is a perfectionist in his work: “the goal we had to achieve
was maximum clarity of sound, and we can gladly say that our efforts were not in
vain!”
To promote this album, the band has worked out a visual theme as well. The logo
on the album cover is a caricature sketch of two individuals (male and female)
whose heads have been merged into the shape of a globe. This logo represents
Peeli Patti and Raja Jani, the lead characters of this album.
A video has also been put out to mark the album launch. The song, titled
Nishaan, is an announcement that “noori is back in the scene and that it is here
to stay!” |

Woh Lamhey Corner Of Bombay |
Pub Date: 24.05.05 |

From a local street urchin to the businessman in the high rise, all fervently
seem to hum that heart-rending track, 'Woh lamhey' in every nook and corner of
this dynamic city. It's the flavour of this season, the song on every radio
station, the blare of every stereo-system in the fly-by-night cars and even
forms the unpretentious whispers of one to his beloved. The creators of this
phenomenon, the Numero Uno band of Pakistan, Jal took the audience by storm for
the first time in India on Friday at the amphitheatre at Bandra. The hour and
half performance of the songs from their debut album, 'Aadat', released in India
by Hom records with their enthusiastic grooving to the foot-tapping music and
indomitable spirit left the spectators enthralled…only asking for more.
The young trio recently bagged the Indus Music Award for the 'Best Band of
2005', in competition with Strings, Fuzon, Josh and other popular Pakistani
bands. The band consists of 23-year-old Gohar Mumtaz, the lead and rhythm
guitarist, vocalist, composer and lyricist; Farhan Saeed, the 21-year-old lead
vocalist and Shazi, the bass guitarist. Their sound primarily falls in the pop,
soft rock genre. Playing along the lines of Latin acoustic guitars, their main
emphasis is on melodies and lyrical content. "We truly believe that music is the
world's universal language capable of bringing, entities even nations together.
We feel home here in India. The response has been so warm and motivating that we
want to only make soulful music that you cannot live without!" said an
unrestrained Farhan, the singer with a distinctive vocal style that showcases a
gentle vulnerability and tenderness.
"We want to be like Jal- water, that makes its way wherever it goes, our work is
straight from the heart and we thank Allah greatly for his grace … as such
success can only be His gift, candidly confessed Gohar, who formed the band in
2002 at Lahore composing his first song by the name 'Aadat' and began his search
for like-minded musicians. "To meet these two, from different cities and then
being so appreciated by the masses back home is all luck and destiny, with our
willpower and talent too." On being asked about the fact that the film 'Zeher'
stole the accolades by the remix of their track, they said, "Initially we were
hurt but now people do know that the song is our original composition. We met
Mr. Mahesh Bhatt and he told us that he was misguided…and also the two versions
are completely different."At the end of the concert, Jal signed several
autographs and clicked pictures with eager teenyboppers, as they excitedly
shouted for attention, to be called on stage. The trio was here from Pakistan
with a peace-note and receiving this overwhelming response in just five days
they decide to make a trip back to the city in the first week of June. "As for
now we go back to give our exams in is doing his computer science course.
Pakistan and then globe-trotting to several cities to perform," said Farhan
